Gilboa Quarry
At 137 feet, Gilboa has the distinction of being the deepest inland diver training site in the Midwest. You don’t have to be a technical diving student, however, to dive Gilboa. There is plenty to see and do at much shallower depths.
Gilboa Quarry occupies 14 acres of a 25-acre wooded parcel, bordered by a historic millstream. Located less than 20 minutes west of Interstate 75, the quarry is close to accommodations and dining.
The true measure on any quarry is what is there to see? Here Gilboa excels in both the aquatic life and artifact departments.
- Fish stocks include walleye, bass and perch. Diver-fed rainbow trout have become Gilboa's equivalent of the Caribbean’s yellow snappers. And, if you are lucky, you may even see one of the many endangered paddlefish in the quarry’s far reaches.
- Artificial reef sites include five boats, a school bus and a Volkswagen camper. There is a tethered diving bell, from which a semitrailer is suspended at 80 feet.
It’s easy to see why Giboa is among the Midwest’s favorite dive sites.
