NORTH CAROLINA WRECK DIVING August 16-18, 2019

North Carolina’s famous “Graveyard of the Atlantic” is home to countless wrecks — many sunk by German U-boats during World War II. These wrecks are now home to a wide variety of encrusting corals, large schools of fish and, in many instances, roving packs of sand tigers.

Just Add Water’s August trip to Morehead City includes three days of diving. Although it is possible to fly from Cleveland to Raleigh-Durham and then drive the final three hours to the coast, you may rather car pool, as overall travel time is roughly the same, and you avoid the hassles and expense of trying to take dive gear on connecting commuter flights. (Drive time from Cleveland is roughly ten hours.)

Boat

Our host for this trip is Olympus Dive Center, who has been diving these wrecks for the past four decades. Olympus operates three different boats, and is located right on the water. We will offer the option of staying at Olympus’s nearby Dive Lodge, which offers bunk-style accommodations, as well as kitchen and lounge facilities. There are several nearby restaurants.

Ray

Water temperatures this time of year are typically in the mid- to upper-70s. You’ll want a full-length suit of at least 5 mm. Because of the distance to many of the offshore wrecks, charters depart early and are typically out for most of the day. Divers are responsible for supplying all necessary equipment, including tanks and weights.

Shark

You can expect to see not only historic wrecks, but a wide variety of aquatic life, including large schools of fish, rays and sharks. Because of their gnarly teeth, sand tigers have a rather fearsome appearance. In reality, they are among the most mellow of sharks.
