THE VILLA AT DUNBAR ROCK GUANAJA April 27 - May 4, 2019

The Villa on Dunbar Rock is one of the Caribbean’s most unique dive resorts. This historical landmark was once used as a mooring for the famous pirate Blackbeard. Local legend hints at buried treasure. When the original owner was constructing the villas, he discovered a hidden cave. He found many pieces of pre-Colombian pottery, but no treasure.

The Villa on Dunbar Rock is not just a resort – it’s a dream vacation destination. Visits to Dunbar Rock offer a unique dive vacation experience from start to finish. As you can well imagine, the “getting-here” is your first introduction to what sets this destination apart.

Guests arriving at the Guanaja Airport are warmly greeted by our staff and escorted not to a parking lot and shuttle van, (no parking lot, no road!) but to a dock and transfer boat for the ten-minute boat transfer to the cay. Time to sit back and relax and enjoy the scenery.

Resort

Perched on a cay with 360° views of Sandy Bay, Guanaja and surrounding cays, this unique resort blends beauty, serenity and something unidentifiably special in a laid-back, inviting atmosphere. The 15,000 square foot property is spread across four floors. The ground level provides access to a private white sand beach for lounging, swimming and snorkeling and dive center just off the docks.

Swing

All rooms include a desk, casual seating and closet with digital safe and laundry basket for the free laundry service. There are quiet, wall-mount air conditioners as well as ceiling fans for those who prefer the fresh sea air. Bathrooms are updated with tiled floors and walls and granite vanity tops. Each room has a private balcony with sitting area.

Dining

Guanaja’s fringing reef is a protected marine reserve making it an ideal spot for scuba diving and snorkeling nearly anywhere offshore the mainland. Part of a volcanic and coral mountain range called The Bonacca Ridge, Guanaja marks the beginning of the second largest barrier reef in the world. It offers a mixture of pinnacles, vertical walls, lava tunnels and wrecks including the nearby Jado Trader, one of the most sought-after wrecks in the Caribbean. It also boasts nearly every species of coral growing in the Caribbean Sea, including several species of rare black coral, and sponges of all colors, shapes and sizes.

Pinnacle

The scuba diving in Guanaja shares many similarities to our sister islands, however being a remote location with few visitors, our reefs have remained virtually untouched by diver impact. There is also no competition for dives sites, as with only two dive operators and 45+ sites, you really will feel like you have our reef system all to your own.

Crab

Visibility is generally around 100 feet/30 meters. During the rainy season (roughly October to January) visibility can dip below the usual, though we are always able to scout out the areas that offer the best conditions. Currents are mostly mild to non-existent.
